Just don't pay too much. Early anvils are a bit rare but they're around too. If it's a tool that you really want, just start looking and you'll find lot's to choose from.
Most, including myself prefer anvils from Hay Budden. I have a 155lb HB from the late late 1800's. I beleive that HB quick making anvils in 1925.
