As far as auto vs 4 speed,it depends how you use your truck.

The 727 is a great tranny.In my opinion its only downfall is the heat it generates,and the slightly less gas milage.

These are the reasons that I am building a 383/np435 combo for my tow vehicle.I have heard complaints about the city driveability of the 435,but I am willing to trade that for cooler engine temps when its 105 out and I am pulling a trailer up the Lewiston hill.It is also nice to be able to keep the front Xmember in tact in the pre 68 trucks.:)
