I would check the Oring or replace it. if hte Oring is still kind of soft and still nicely tucked in its groove I dont chage them. if it is rock hard or broken it must be changed. Getting the new one to stay in place while installing the canister can be a pain in the neck! IF you put a new one in push it in its groove real good before attempting to install canister. I like the canister style but many change over to spin on for convenience. I like canister because i can see easier waht kind of material is building up in my filter. and in a 4x4 they cnat get punctured by sticks like I saw once on the trail on a chev.
