I can't find the link right now. But one of the universities is playing with an engine with both diesel direct injection, and gasoline ported injection, and 9:1 compression. Computer controlled, the diesel/gas ratio will vary from idling on 90% diesel, to accelerating on 90% gas. The big deal is that they are getting the thermal efficiency to umm nearly double. That means instead of being 35% efficient conversion of heat to motorvatiing, they get 55%.

I believe they were spark igniting the gas, then the heat will set off the diesel. I'd think the big saving is in not needing to compress the air charge to 22:1 to light the diesel.

And also using a cetane booster chemical to allow easier combustion of the diesel. A washer bottle size tank under the hood, would take a quart each fill up, metered in by yet another injection system.

All experimental, using a Cat diesel cut down to one cylinder.

Buy new pistons, add a throttle body injector system, and get the 4BTA up to 32 mpg...
