They drill eady, only cast iron. but my machinist used a BFH.

I think I'd try a compromise- drill the hole somewhat bigger, then try the bfh. Bigger hole=less guide strength. That would avoid the screwdriver blade bit...

The high tech machinist would put the block on his big milling machine and drill them out totally with a piloted drill.

Did you know you can change them with the tappets still in? Drive them down, break the bottom off with a hammer, drive, break, repeat.
