Those bevel gears wear, and the wear is magnified 4x cause that is the way bevel gears wrrk. Between gear teeth wearing and the shim behind them wearing, it can feel like lots of slop yet be inconsequential.

The drive line u-joints get sloppy too, but are easy to spot. The shaft can turn a bit, but the pinion yoke does not.
