Whenever I've gotten into any rig with owner-installed extras in the wiring, it's proven to be a real mess. It's gotten to where if I see one of those clip-on plastic electric wire taps, I just know everything's going to be messed up. Most of the time they either try to add something or try to fix something, but after they do it, something else doesn't work. Then, rather than figure out what they did wrong, they start bypassing and disconnecting other things trying to make it work. Half the time, by the time they're done, they've managed to get power to the ignition some way or another, usually not via the intended route, but half the gauges and lights don't work. Obviously, breaking the ground wire is the wrong way to do it, which makes me think any number of other things could be wrong.
