But other than being a wise ass, can you check for cranking rhythm? Does it crank evenly ? That is about the only compression test doable without a special compression tester. Bad valves are death on a diesel, and would get progressively worse.

Pumps and filter are good places to start too. How about an air leak, sucking air in to the fuel? Or water in the fuel? Is there a filter drain, to check for water?
