When mine failed at flat nasty I could not steer left so must be a different problem. I had a crushed ball in the recirculating ball portion. The guys at west texas off road that rebuilt my box told me they found gunk (there words) in my box also and suggested that they typically won't warrenty a box rebuild unless the pump is replaced at the same time they did warrenty. Mine by the way was fixed for free and they are one of a hand full of vendors in the off road industry that I have dealt with that I would recommend to anyone. He also suggested flushing all the lines. I mention this because there are apparently some very small hydraulic passages in the box and any dirt may restrict flow which could cause the problems you describe. I have never had any problems with air including when I broke a return line on the trail and replaced it with a piece of air hose (still there by the way). Its too bad you bought a new box my ported for hydraulic assist saginaw is probably for sale since I will have to switch to crossover steering with the axle swap.
