The air over hydraulic brakes on M35 and M54 series trucks are just the same as regular hydraulic brakes in terms of master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and plumbing. The only difference is the "air-pack" booster, which can be troublesome. I have not worked on the normal truck and bus air brakes, but from the one rig I work on that has them, they don't seem particularly complicated, and I think the parts are fairly standardized. If anything, it looks a good bit simpler than the "air over hydraulic" setup on the M-series trucks. I think the army just didn't want to use normal air brakes on those trucks because when the air goes out, the brakes lock up, which is not good in a combat situation. With the air-over-hydraulic, if the air goes out, you lose the power boost, but you can still drive the truck and have some manual braking ability.
