It's depressing to see all the still usable stuff. There was a tie when you could poke around and find all kinds of stuff and the owner would just say go ahead... take it. Or sell it to you for a couple cents over scrap price. Now it's as if the Chinese steel companies own all of the scrap yards in this country and want to hog all the old iron out the country, depriving us of the chance to resurrect something of value and use it, in favor of melting it down and making cheap junk vises, wrenches, cars and everything else. I recently saw a pile of 3/8" chain, about 4 or 5 feet in diameter and 2 or 3 feet deep, just laying there waiting to be grabbed with the magnet and hauled away.
