1. Maintain proper tire pressure.
2. Maintain proper brake shoe adjustment.
3. Make sure the parking brake band does not ride on the top of the brake drum (drag).
4. Use the correct weight oil in the drive train components for climate.
5. Timing, points, and plug gaps are all important. Set timing at 2 BTDC using a timing light, test light or portable radio.
6. Float in carb should be at appropriate level.
7. Oil in breather s/b correct for climate.
8. Change radiator fan from 6 to 4 blades.
9. Use stock rims, not combat.
10. You're changing to free wheeling hubs which is good.

Compression is important although the truck will still run with less than 90 pounds. With stock drive train you can Cruz up to 45mph, spurts up to 55mph. If you want 15mpg+ highway, you need to eliminate any drive train/brake drag as much as possible. In doing 1-10 you can expect 13-14mpg highway @ 40mph. More speed can be achieved going to 4.98 gears and 5 speed OD tranny or OD.
