Contrary to what Paul in NY thinks, the seam consists of the two roof panels with edges bent down 90° for resistance welds. Then a piece of very thin , we're talking beer can tin, trim, bent into a tee shape, is inserted before the spot welding. It probably got a sealant worked in, then rolled down tight to retain the sealant.

So, how come people don't want to use a lap seam, because it might hold moisture, but do want to weld on a strip outside the same seam?

There was no rust to my actual seam, no 'T' strip visible either. It looked like it never had one. So I cleaned it out, seam sealed, and painted. Nice neat cleavage joint.

Best fix would probably be to eliminate the trim 'T' and lead the seam. Sealed, rust proof, weather tight, permanently.
