Sounds like a great project. I always wanted to do a shovel/crane.

Spend a day masking/sealing anything you don't want sand in.

+ 10 on the "rent a towable unit". Mine was a 4 cylinder gas unit w a scroll compressor.

Unless you're going to recycle, I'd stick with sandblasting sand (sharp - not play sand). Get 1.5x the sand you think you'll need. And put it through a sieve first.

If you have a dryer/moisture trap available it will help.

Be ready with something to passivate/condition the bare metal with.

And enough primer to paint it with that day.
