It's not the size of a guy's cylinder....

Or even how vertical it is. ;)

It's the amp draw of the motor. The manufacturers lie about everything else, but amp draw has to be right to avoid electrical overloads. They used to sell "phoney five" horse power compressors. Actually about 2hp. But reading the max amp draw will tell you the actual horsepower, at the rate of 780 watts per hp. Multiply amps time volts to get watts.

Hint: you can not get five horses on a 110v circuit. The limit might be about two, but in my book every machine I've ever had, over one hp, runs better on 220.

Tank size will let the motor cool off between startings. An appropriate tank is one that the pump will fill from empty in two minutes.

Sand blasting is like having the hose off the compressor, wide full open loss of air. Needs a BIG pump. My 3 hp won't keep up with my Sears plastic hopper gravity fed blaster.

But I do like the idea of a pressure pot. Lots more sand flow, means faster removal, so less over all air consumption. Plus, you'll need to stop and refill the tank, letting the small compressor catch up and take a rest.

Last one I used was powered by a trailer diesel compressor. No gun on the end, just the rubber hose, so no nozzle to wear out and replace. 1 1/2" hose?
