Dave,
The stabilizer is normally a band-aid used to mask another issue with the front end. Replacing the stabilizer might temporarily cure the problem, but only hides the underlying cause.
There are dozens of reasons for the shimmy (that's what us oldsters call "death wobble", as it was very common back in the day and we weren't as dramatic as folks are nowdays.... = )
It's cause can be as simple as tire air pressure, out of balance tires (tires MUST be spun balanced to be accurately balanced) a bent wheel, a loose or worn front suspension or steering part (such as a bad tie rod end)a bad shock, or an incorrect wheel alignment. Modern vehicles have an "over constrained" steering alignment for comfort and handling, that means there is not enough caster in the factory settings and increasing the front end alignment to the max factory tolerance or within 1 degree or so, can correct front end shimmy IF all the other specs and front end components are in good condition and adjustment.
We have talked about this many times over the years, there might be a write up in the "best of the forum"?
