That's a good way of putting it. They're definitely capitalizing on their reputation. That kind of thing happens a lot when the old man dies and the son takes over the company and wants to apply what he learned in business school, which usually includes slicker marketing, expanding the product line, decreasing the cost of production, and raising prices. Not sure if it happened with White's or not. Hoffman's are definitely still hand-made unpretentiously in Kellogg, and I hear there's a small outfit in St Maries that also makes top-quality hand-made logger's boots. Can't remember their name, though.

The problem for me is I don't want logger's boots for everyday work around town. I like a boot that's about 8" high with a fairly smooth urethane sole so it's comfortable, doesn't track too much dirt inside, and doesn't get worn out fast walking on pavement. None of the local shops make that style, but at least until recently the Red Wings were good. Hopefully now that they re-started their US factory, they'll be good again.
