If you buy Hoffman's I know they're made in the USA because I can watch them making them in Kellogg. I don't need logger boots, so I buy Red Wing work boots through Hoffman's. They claim that SOME Red Wings are still made in the US, and I buy the ones that are. The strange thing is on this last pair, the stitching rotted out. I take them to Hoffman's to get them fixed and the lady says they've been having a lot of trouble with that; Red Wing seems to have switched from synthetic to cotton thread for some reason. I hope they switched back. It seems like everybody's trying to economize. I can't imagine the choice of thread saves Red Wing very much money, but maybe they have some new bean-counter who's determined to save every dime possible.

It's like the companies no longer even believe that customers will pay even a little bit extra for better quality. Maybe they all look at Wal*Mart's slogan, "We sell for less" and think that they have to sell for less too. How about a new slogan, "We sell better stuff"? If I wanted the cheapest pair of work boots I could get, I'd buy them at Wal*Mart, but if I decide to buy Red Wings, I'd at least like them to be sewn with thread that doesn't rot. Seems like a small thing to ask.
