I remember having to use a pry bar to get them off the booster. I think it is one of those rings with internal claws that grab the push rod? Hmmm, you did have it snapped in, before posting here? Might make it 3/8" too long?

One shop had a tool for checking push rod protrusion, but I don't recall how the piston depth was measured. Micrometer depth gauge maybe? Dial calipers out to work for both, if you get close. Few need any fine adjustment.
