i think you may be on to something. i need to change the oil regardless. will change all fluids in the cases as they were last done in 1996 when i started the restore. i have to check to make sure that there is oil in the breather assembly. it is not piped to the carb. i am sure the old gas + new gas is contributing to the smell, and i will keep at it. the engine is clean otherwise. i did find that i have a tiny, tiny bubbling at the one of the head bolts where i installed the power steering bracket. i will drain down the coolant tonight and then will clean, and reinstall with some sealant on the threads. What is the best product for this application?

thanks,

Mannyc
