Wow! At least the guy was open about it and posted lots of pictures of the problems.
When I first moved to Idaho they were using sand exclusively. Then the sand got bigger (gravel), windshields suffered, glass shops loved it. Now for about the last 10 years they have been using calcium chloride. They say it's not salt. One of the few things I remember from high school chemistry is that any chloride is extremely corrosive. Like you, I try not to drive my old trucks in the winter. Even in spring, summer and fall, when I do drive them, I try to avoid driving them when it rains. I figure that just liquifies the residue left on the roads.
