Looks like one or more of the carrier housing dowel pins has come of the case. That's the dent you see in the oil slot trough. The teeth look a little pitted but I suspect that since you have a pin floating around in the case you might have damaged the pinion bearings or their cages. Look at the pinion bearing next to the ring gear and see if the roller cage has been deformed. My truck did the same thing but it also broke all the ring gear bolts off. I would pull it apart and inspect it. The chipped/ broken pinion teeth tell me that some of this shrapnel has gotten into the bearings and damaged them. Cost for new bearing s is around $395 from DC trucks. I just got my new set last week from him. I personnally like the lower gears but a new set of 4.89's are probably getting hard to find now and may be expensive. Rebuild the diff yourself using the manual. It is a relatively easy unit to build. I had to make up all the tools to remove the carrier cap, pinion bearing etc..and get a new set of spider gear overhaul parts. For sure your side gears have worn out the original bakelite washers by now. Check the side gear end float with your finger.. if's its more than about 0.005-0.010" your case needs an overhaul.
