I caught that too:

"Richard Barber, of Manhattan, Montana, claimed his nine-year-old son Gus was killed when one of the rifles went off during a hunting trip.

Gus' mother, Barbara Barber, had been unloading her rifle when it went off and said she was certain her finger was not on the trigger when it fired."

How about charging mom with involuntary manslaughter? Then, after she's convicted of that, even if she only gets a day in jail, it would be mighty hard for her to win a civil suit against Remington.

What kind of an idiot would unload a gun while it's pointed at a person? I suppose it's the same kind who carries it around with their trigger finger inside the trigger guard, or clambers over fences and through the brush with the gun loaded and the safety off, or shoots at noises in the bushes, or files lawsuits over things that were their own stupid fault.

That part about what she supposedly said to her dead son at the funeral parlor really burns me. I realize a mother would want to something to the cold corpse of her dead son, but how about, "I'm very, very sorry, son." Or if she want to "effect change", how about she dedicates the rest of her life to teaching mothers like herself to not point loaded gun at things that they don't want holes in, including their own children? This woman made a stupid mistake, perhaps the sort of thing we've all done and gotten away with, but this time she didn't get away with it. Rather than accepting responsibility, she's not only trying to blame someone else, but doing it in a way (via a lawsuit) that's going to hurt a lot of innocent people.

As for being "certain her finger was not on the trigger", that reminds me of all those people whose cars experience sudden acceleration even though they were certain their foot was on the brake, and the harder they pressed the brake, the faster the car went.
