NP/NV was aware of the 5th gear problem a LOT sooner then 1/1/99!! I had a 1999 Ram 3500 CTD brand new 40k spit 5th gear, I went and got the new updated nut and the date on the package was dated 10/1/1996!! Not only that but I know people who have lost 5th gear on the 2000-2002 CTD trucks.

I asked the parts counter man at the dodge dealer why this nut came out in 1996 and my truck was a 1999, 4 YEARS later and it did NOT have this nut from the get go?? He laid some BS line on my that dodge buys those trans in bulk and buys 10's of thousands at a time,, I must have had a left over trans. BS, total BS

Most people know that in 1998 N/V redid the top shifter housing on the NV-4500, it is completely different then the 1997 and older NV4500's, so a 1999 NV4500 has the new style shifter on it, (yes I checked and mine did) and could NOT have been bought it 1996!! He just rolled his eyes at me.

It comes down to the cheap A$$ bean counters at mopar. Back in the day when all this happened to me. I called N/V, spent hours on the phone with both them and mopar about it. It comes down to N/V has/had two part numbers for the same exact NV4500 that goes behind the Cummins trucks. One trans has the same part number as the other one, BUT the last digit on the end of the part number is different, no what the difference is??

One trans has the updated nut that they (NV) came out with in 1996, the other one has the standard NOT updated nut!! The cost difference is only a FEW dollars and I barely got the guy at N/V (I was on the phone with to tell me this),,, but he said when mopar buy's 1000's and 1000's of these trans at a time wouldn't you want to save a few bucks also?? It all adds up he said!! Sure he was right and all,, but it is still wrong. When I bought my truck new I only got the 3/36 warranty on the rest of the drive train, (yes not counting the 100k warranty on the motor) so I lost my 5th gear at 40k, 4k out of warranty, I was SOL.

So dodge could make MORE money off of people like me that did not buy an extended warranty, on the flip side putting on these updated nuts, then spend the few dollars up front on the updated nut in the 1st place, kind of sadd but that is business.

By the way in 2004 when I put a BRAND NEW, not reman NV4500 in my 1993 CTD, the guy I bought it from asked me if I want part number such and such or such and such part number?? I told him I want the one with the updated nut, he said, Oh,, you been there and done that already, yes I told him, I want the one with the updated nut, from the get go!! Going on over 300k (yes towing) on that NV4500 trans still have not lost 5th gear.
