That's exactly what I had on my beater M37, but took off when I fixed up the winch. It was attached to a piece of 3/4" by 8" steel plate bolted between the frame cross-rails under the bed. Like yours, it had a chain sprocket on one output. The other output was run forward to an MU2 winch via a drive shaft with some very sharp angles in it which was twisted and the joints were ruined. Rather than actuating it with cables like yours, they rigged some extra levers in the cab and had rigid linkages. Somebody put a fair amount of work into it, and it probably worked initially, but was worn out and not good for anything for me, so I took it out. I still have the gearbox. If feels like it's full of rust and water and will need bearings and seals if I ever use it for something. I can't remember the Spicer part number off-hand, but I googled it and couldn't find any mention of it. My guess is that the sprocket once drove a generator, welder, or air compressor mounted in the back. The truck has a homemade wooden flat bed on it.

Is yours on your new wrecker? Hopefully it's a more professional installation and the drive-lines run at reasonable angles and still work and don't block access to the transmission oil filler plug.

On your truck, did they turn the PTO around so the output shaft goes out the back? That's what they did on mine. I was able to take it apart and put it back the original way, but had to make a bracket for the PTO lever pivot since they'd cut the bracket off of the solid end cover when they turned it around. I suspect you could take that splitter box apart and make the shafts come out of whichever end you want as well.
