I would not want to use kerosene in any gauge. It polymerizes over time, turning brown and gummy, especially in sunlight. If you've left a kerosene lamp with a glass bowl in a sunny window, you've seen the results within a year. I'm sure that all fluid-filled gauge nowadays use some kind of silicone oil.
