Possibly in the hot climate of Vietnam motor pools might have removed the side covers to get better cooling in the engine compartment.
The Nissan & toyota versions were undoubtedly used in SE Asia. As mentioned, Toyota had the HQ10 diesel version and the FQ10 gas version. The H diesel showed up in Landcruiser pickups in '74 but might have been used much earlier in these trucks. The Nissan SD33 is smaller, 3.3L as opposed to the 3.6L of the H and 4.0L of the 2H, and has only 4 main bearings instead of 7, it is also shorter. I"d buess the HQ10 has a major indented firewall for the H.
The Koreans also make excellent copies of the M715, and M35 and M54 2.5 and 5 tonners. the bigger ones are powered by MAN diesels, the M715 copy has a 4L 6 cyl diesel and 5 speed.
