I have had the exact same problem. Generator just wouldn't charge the battery so I would have to put it on the charger frequently. I had to replace that battery every 4-6 months, it would swell up and hiss (I believe a cracked plate)
I did eventually find out that it was my regulator, I had ajusted it once but it failed again soon after. After on complete year (yes including winter which 6 volt isn't made for) I switched to 12 volt even though I knew it was just the regulator. 6 volt just can't cut it. My truck now starts instantly in any season and you can also run normal accessories. 6 volt batteries cost more and also don't last as long (they are only supposed to last 1 year) I have a friend with a jeep has 6 volt and it was working fine, now he has the same problem and will switch to 12.
It is the best upgrade you can make
