I was having trouble kinda like that with my truck. I had just swapped engines, and it would run fine then like crap to the point of stalling. Figured out the fuel pump had some scale let go and it sucked up into the carb where it would stick in the needle valve and overflow the carb. Then you'd left it and start it again later and it would run fine until the crud happened to stick the valve again. Then same problem again. Had to put another fuel filter inbetween the pump and carb. And take the carb top off and clean the crap out. Now it's fine.
But this sure wouldn't change your timing so I don't know.
