what is the need to take the drum off the hub

cant you back off the adjusters, remove the axle and inner spindle nut and remove the hub and drum together? i have always removed the drum, but in retrospect if you are not going to replace the drums, why bother? best way to turn the drums is to leave them attached to the hubs. might be a little more grunt work, but you can service the hubs with the drum attached and you can service the backing plate without the hub, no?
