in order to be get sufficient density (quantity) hydrogen has to be stored either under extremely high pressure, the temperature cryogenically reduced (-423F) or it has to be bound to some other material (metal hydride) and released though heating.

The promise of a hydrogen economy has been vastly oversold.

The most promising method is metal hydrid storage, but this raises the question of how to distribute the hydrogen in the first place.

Sadly, this just isn't going to happen.

The more likely alternative fuel scenario would be where you would take local sources of cellulose waste and convert it into alcohol using engineered enzymes.
