Indeed, SBCs always had problems with cams going flat. The oil issue would only make it worse. But the truth about the oil is that the ZDDP (zinc) isn't so much there to be a lubricant, but it's purpose is being a pressure modifier for the oil. There are zinc additives you can buy from the parts store or from Summit Racing, or you can buy Brad Penn Racing oil which is formulated with a high zinc content specifically for the older flat tappet motors. Rotella T also works for now, but be careful, as that is being reformulated with less zinc too. This issue with the oil is something that the oil companies should make more known as I have had to explain this to many of my customers many, many times already....
