Take a gallon plastic milk jug full of water and adapt a short length of 1/4" fuel line to the threaded neck where the cap would screw on.
While driving down the road at 55mph, have a buddy hold the full milk jug out the window and turn it upside down. I'll bet you will travel over five miles before the water in that jug empties.
5 mpg is sucking a LOT of fuel. But I agree. I got only 6 mpg with the 440 in my '62 W100 Town Panel.
