John,I also used to buy the individual pieces from Napa,then I found they sell rolls of the different size brake lines in different diameters for around $25.00 for 25 feet. I invested in the hydraulic flair tool that is hand held. After a few trials and errors, the double flares come out perfect. With the manual tool I experienced the cracking that you talk about in your post.Try Paul's advice with the brake fluid and when you flare try tightening a little bit slower. Good Luck, Dan H
