Knew a pro field dog trialer that used to catch rattle snakes, de-fang them, throw them in the drive way and then turn his dog loose. Of course the dog had a shock collar on and every time the dog paid any attention to the snake, ht was lit up. It is a little late for training for your dog but if you have or can borrow a shock collar, if you see what is about to happen you could definitely keep him from getting close to it.
If you do see a snake, wether the dog pays any attention to it or not, I would kill it and make double sure that the dog did not want anything to do with a snake again, ever! I will leave the method up to you.
