With older engines, it has been suggested to me that adding a very small amount of diesel to today's gas is not a bad idea. It puts back in the heavies that they have removed. I am sure that today's newer engines would not like this.

Also, always run the tank or carb on your small engine dry. It will stop any water from collecting and it will also reduce the chance of any sludge or varnish from forming. There is always a little water in any gas and there is always condensation in the tank. If you run it dry the minor amount of water will pass through just fine. It is when you let water build up that problems happen. Ethanol aggravates the water issue.

There is a reason why most small engines have a plastic gas tank these days. It is to stop the corrosion issue. Also there are issues with older gaskets and seals with today's gas. It will cause them to swell and disintegrate.
