I am a member of the Vol. FD where I live in fact. I realize that our small community does not have the tax base to have on call firefighters at the stations. Everyone also realizes that that in a rural area such as we have, your house will probably not be saved. There just takes too much time between when the calls goes into the dispatch center to be paged to the membership, then who knows who can even respond to the station to get the fire engine out.
That's just part of living in rural America. Big city stuff is totally different, tactics are different, the fitness of the membership is different. Homes, property, and lives are saved because once you make the call a fire engine with four well trained and fit for duty fire fighters are going to be at you door in 6 minutes or less.
That's not a dig towards the Volunteers either, as they are doing the best they can with what they have and the way they are equipped.
