The economy is tough all over, I can't see why the public employees should be immune.

But on another philosophical note, the fire departments around here ought to change their titles to some thing like "Municipal Emergency Service Department". Seems only 2% of calls are building fires. Mostly, trucks loaded with firefighting apparatus respond to ambulance calls. They ought to sell half their fire trucks, buy twice as many ambulances, call themselves paramedic-firefighters instead of the reverse, leave the truck in the house with one engineer/driver. Pull the truck out for fire calls, have the guys in the ambulance meet the truck. For ambulance calls requiring a big crew to lift pig patients, send two. Ambulances have got to be cheaper that those million dollar trucks.

Just a way to cost save, for so many departments that have to at least consider better management of scarcer resources.

But I do realize the voters will vote more money for "public safety"...
