Earl: I had the same thing happen on the rear axle of my M37 truck. It turned out that the ring gear bolts had all sheared off and the ring gear would spin freely on the carrier. Still the best way to find out is pull out the two axle shafts then the third member assembly. It's the only way to know for sure..what happened
