First make sure plug leads are to correct plugs - pull the distributor cap and turn the engine over to see which way the rotor turns and which plugs the leads go to - some 4's are 1, 3, 4, 2 and others are 1, 2, 4, 3 so you may need to swap a couple leads. Are they new spark plugs? Some faulty plugs look OK when they aren't under pressure but won't fire when in the engine.
Next check start it up and spray some ezy-start around the inlet manifold, if it runs better there is a vacuum leak at the manifold.
If none of the above works, pull the tappet cover and check valve clearance. Run the engine at idle without the cover to look for bent push-rods.
