It sounds like the people around there at that time were for the most part tough as railroad spikes. And some of them sound like they were not much smarter, when it came to heeding the warnings. Some of them preferred to hang out and drink the last of the whiskey so it didn't go to waste, to the expense of their own lives.
I noticed one of the fire crew was a man whose last name was Hollingshead. I built a house here for some people with that name about 20 years ago. They live in Lewiston. It's such an unusual name I figure they must be related.
There are areas in the lake where I fish for bass that have huge stumps still anchored in the lake bottom. These were cedar trees that were cut down when they built the dam at Albeni to raise the lake. They are surprisingly sound for being under water for 6 months, and frozen for at least 3 months each year.
