Transfer case

Good day to all , need some help with transfer case. I have a 1952 powerwagon and was usign it last week and soemthing happened to the transfer case , when I put the truck into reverse and back it up it moves, but as soon as I push in the clutch the transfer case makes a loud noise and the truck comes to quick joilting stop. Any ideas of what I need to be looking at when I take the unit off?
