The 413 truck/industrial engines had crankshafts with extended flanges, a large water pump that fed both block and heads, the heads were unique not only because the pump bolted to them, but because they were physically taller than a car head. Because they were taller, they used longer pushrods. They also had sodium filled valves. The blocks had heavier webbing around the mains and reinforcement ribs on the sides of the block. Also, they were factory gear timed and did not use a timing chain. The gear set did not use idler gears like a Pete Jackson gear drive, rather, they just had a crank gear and a cam gear that were in direct mesh. That required that the cam be ground to operate in the opposite direction of the crank rotation and the intermediate shaft was also set up to run backwards compared to the car engine. Some of these engines also had special oil pump covers that had the relief valve configured vertically and used a cartridge oil filter also configured vertically. The car engine oil pump had relief valve and spin-on filter configured horizontally. Harmonic balancer was also different. It was thicker than the car balancer, but a smaller diameter. Many of these also had a special driver side valve cover that actually had a fill tube brazed in from the factory. Many of the truck engines used a special oil pan that had a fitting in the side for an oil drain for a belt driven air compressor. The blocks weigh about 20-25 lbs. more than the standard car block did. These engines were indeed their own design for the more extreme applications and were very low compression. However, the blocks can be used in a car or pickup truck application with all the car components installed to them.
