I saw a post some time ago with a link to a machinist's forum thread.
It was about rust penetrants. They did an experiment with several liquids on their ability to free up rusted nuts on bolts. They measured the torque needed after soaking with the various compounds. I think they had Kroil, PT blaster, WD-40 to name a few t test against each other.
The commercial one that performed best was Kroil.
However, they also used a mixture of 50% ATF fluid and 50% kerosene as one of the test fluids.
This mixture performed nearly as well as Kroil, for only a fraction of the cost.
