Usual condition is spring totally compressed, tighten end plug until everything is snug, back off to 'previous' pin hole. Then as the sockets wear, the spring retains some semblance of tight.

Did you notice that the two ends are assembled in reverse order? Defined by the different slot lengths of the 'key hole' cut outs.
