Gordon, Yeah slang for submerged arc. Some of the fluxcores are also shielded with inert gas and called dualshields. The open arc wires don't have flux or gas shields but burn off the oxidizers in the air to protect and stabilize the deposit. Allot of the hardsurfacing alloys are open arc.
