Ok, played some more tonight. Cut the plate into strips and did a couple of different welds. Most of these are with the recommended settings. I upped the wire feed for one of the L-shaped pieces. The voltage control is very granular and seems best where it's at.
The two L-shaped pieces were done as a fillet weld between the two ends, which is how the pieces of my new crossmember are set up. I also did a fillet weld and a butt weld.
Then I took the reciprocating saw and cut them open. More/better pictures at the link below.
Honestly the welds may not look pretty but they seemed to be solid.
