Synthetics are undeniably better than their conventional counterparts. I think for gear boxes, differentials, etc. they're worth the extra investment. I have Royal Purple for the transfer case and differentials on the PW.

Engine oil is a different animal. I like it for certain circumstances and think it's a waste for others.

The hard part is that any more it's harder to determine when you're paying for synthetic performance and when it's a buzz word used to charge extra. For instance most modern automatic transmission fluid used in new cars is fully synthetic by design, so paying extra for a version branded "synthetic" is probably just wasting money.
