I don't think a gas engine's natural braking can ever be as good as that of a diesel with a jake brake, but it's much better than an unmodified diesel.

As for runaways, that's generally caused by the engine sucking lube oil past worn rings or the turbo seals. At that point the only cure is to cut off the air. I've been advised (but have not done it) when starting an unknown old diesel engine for the first time to have a friend standing by with a jacket or other heavy cloth to throw over the air intake if it tries to run away with itself. Someone else suggested a CO2 fire extinguisher.
