Last month I drove my 52 CDN M-37 truck to the store for some ice cream and back. On the way home I pulled away from the light as always and I heard a loud bang in the back. The truck would not move when gassed so I pulled over and looked underneath. I found I could spin the rear driveshaft easily by hand without moving the truck. I got home in front wheel drive and then pulled out each rear axle shaft. They were both ok with no signs of twisting or damages. So today I pulled the rear diff housing and found all the ring gear bolts had been sheared off. They were lying in the housing bottom. The ring gear was spinning on the carrier. The carriers three dowels were out of their holes as well. They were also on the bottom. The case end cap did not spin as the holes are still aligned. Looks like the bearings are ok , they spin freely and very little debris was found in the housing. The gears are not broken or chipped and appear to be fine. Looks like I'm ready for a rebuild I guess. This unit was rebuilt about 8 years with new bearings and such , so I will check if the carrier is good and then if ok install new ring gear bolts and use it as a spare. I can send pics if someone can post them... Terry in Ont.
